Anticipated Features and Additions to Civilization 5
On February 18th 2010, 2K games announced that Sid Meier’s Civilization games series would be launching Civilization 5, the fifth part in this strategic game series. As with any release of a continuing game series, gamers everywhere are wondering what changes and features will be in Civ 5 and how can it improve their combat and building skills. Your map is one of the first things you will notice that has made improvements. City ruins, roads, camps, and pastures have all been improved and you can now build farms on hills.
There are quite a few changes to the game that have made it less cluttered as well. Here are some changes and features you can look forward to seeing in Civ 5.
• Unique personalities and traits are now instilled for each leader
• Both religion and espionage systems have been removed
• There are 18 civilizations, each one with one leader most likely
• Your terrain will now have a greater influence on how your combats turn out
• The game squares have been changed to hexagons, or hexes.
• There are now city-states, neutrals, that can offer you combat bonuses if you are nice enough to them
• Finally, diplomacy plays a much bigger role and becomes very important
The civilizations that we know for sure made it to Civ 5 are America, Russia, Persia, Rome, Japan, Greece, Egypt, Germany, Arabia, Iroquois, China, France, England, Aztec and India. The Civ website had last reported that there was four possibilities for the final two spots; Inca, Viking, Siam, and Songhai. We won’t really know the full list of Civilizations until we can play the game for ourselves.
Your units have taken a change as well. On top of only being able to have one unit per hex, your unit will not automatically die if a combat is lost. You can also swap your unit out with one next to you if you need to in Civ 5. Unfortunately you may see that you can only have a limited number of units to maintain because there have been some changes to cost. Your units take longer to produce in Civ 5 and because of that there have been some raised costs with keeping them kept. Also, because troop transports have been removed your units actually transform into floating transports themselves. Unit types in Civ 5 are Great people, Galleys, Archers, Warriors, Catapults, Spear-men, Mace men and Jaguars.
The official Civ website stated on June 11, 2010 that we can expect to see Civilization 5 available in America September 21, 2010 and everywhere else internationally September 24, 2010. They are also released a Social Gaming network called the Civilization Network for online play with people all over the world. There is definitely a new vision to Civ 5 and it really makes for a more realistic, fun experience. You can check out Firaxis’s official website for more information on the release date and places to purchase.
